چکیده

Penta-twinned metallic NWs have recently received much attention due to their excellent mechanical properties. However, their elasticity size effect remains not well understood due to the large discrepancy in the reported experimental and simulation results. This paper reports an experimental effort to address the discrepancy about the size-dependent Young’s modulus of penta-twinned Ag NWs. Two independent experiments on the same NW, in-situ resonance test and tensile test in a scanning electron microscope, were used to measure the Young’s moduli. The cross-sectional shape of the Ag NWswas found to transit from pentagon to circle with decreasing NW diameter, which can modify the Young’s modulus asmuch as 8% (for resonance test) and 19% (for tensile test) for the tested diameter range. This work confirmed that the Young’s modulus of penta-twinned Ag NWs increases with decreasing NW diameter. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Recoverable plasticity in penta-twinned metallic nanowires governed by dislocation nucleation and retraction

There has been relatively little study on time-dependent mechanical properties of nanowires, in spite of their importance for the design, fabrication and operation of nanoscale devices. Here we report a dislocation-mediated, time-dependent and fully reversible plastic behaviour in penta-twinned silver nanowires. In situ tensile experiments inside scanning and transmission electron microscopes s...

Nucleation-controlled distributed plasticity in penta-twinned silver nanowires.

A unique size-dependent strain hardening mechanism, that achieves both high strength and ductility, is demonstrated for penta-twinned Ag nanowires (NWs) through a combined experimental-computational approach. Thin Ag NWs are found to deform via the surface nucleation of stacking fault decahedrons (SFDs) in multiple plastic zones distributed along the NW. Twin boundaries lead to the formation of...

Molecular Dynamics Study on the Distributed Plasticity of Penta-Twinned Silver Nanowires

The distributed plasticity of pentatwinned silver nanowires has been revealed in recent computational and experimental studies. However, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have not considered the imperfections seen in experiments, such as irregular surface undulations, the high aspect ratio of nanowires, and the stiffness of loading devices. In this work, we report the effect of such inher...

Forced vibration of piezoelectric nanowires based on nonlocal elasticity theory

In this paper, a numerical solution procedure is presented for the free and forced vibration of a piezoelectric nanowire under thermo-electro-mechanical loads based on the nonlocal elasticity theory within the framework of Timoshenko beam theory. The influences of surface piezoelectricity, surface elasticity and residual surface stress are taken into consideration. Using Hamilton’s principle, t...

Overpotential for CO2 electroreduction lowered on strained penta-twinned Cu nanowires† †Electronic supplementary information (ESI) available: Details of DFT and MD calculations, CHE model and reaction pathways for C2H4 production. See DOI: 10.1039/c5sc02667a Click here for additional data file.

Based on first-principles calculations, we predict that penta-twinned Cu nanowires (NWs) are superior to conventional Cu catalysts for CO2 electroreduction. The penta-twinned NWs possess a combination of ultrahigh mechanical strength, large surface-to-volume ratios and an abundance of undercoordinated adsorption sites, all desirable for CO2 electroreduction. In particular, we show that the pent...
